Building the vocabulary of a new medium.
Social-first publishing, structural hashtags, simultaneous distribution — how the grammar of Arabic digital media got written, and what it taught me.
At MBN I was part of the generation that had to decide what digital publishing even looked like for Arabic-language media. There was no established playbook to localize. The playbook simply did not exist yet — we were standing where it was supposed to be.
So we wrote it in practice. We thought social-first when we published. We used hashtags structurally, as architecture, rather than decoratively. We distributed across platforms simultaneously instead of in sequence. Choices that read as obvious now were genuine arguments then.
We weren't doing digital strategy. We were building the vocabulary of a new medium — in a language that had never had one.
This is the part outsiders underestimate about emerging markets. Sometimes the work is not adapting an established grammar; it is authoring one. And the standards you set early have a way of becoming the defaults that everyone after you simply inherits.
It is also why I distrust imported best practices applied without translation. A best practice is an answer to a question some other market already asked and settled. The genuinely interesting markets are the ones still writing the questions.
